Hi Raspberry Pi community,
we are from Coimbatore, India. Our team is manufacturing a commercial tea/coffee vending machine with a custom HMI (Qt/QML touchscreen UI for drink selection, customizations, alerts, etc.). We're using Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) with a customized Raspberry Pi OS image and have already developed half the software.
We're planning to sell the product in India, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Dubai, Canada,Europe,UK and a few other countries.
Main questions/doubts:
Is it allowed to use RPi CM4 in a commercial/resold product?
Are there any specific authorization, licensing, or restrictions from Raspberry Pi for reselling CM4-based devices? (e.g., trademark rules, bulk purchasing requirements, or prohibitions on commercial embedding?)
What certifications/compliance are required for our target markets?
For India: BIS certification — can we reference CM4's existing India certificate (from pip.raspberrypi.com) and self-declare, or do we need full re-testing?
Singapore (IMDA), Malaysia (SIRIM), Australia (RCM) — same question: modular certs help?
General: What documents/tests do we need for the final product (with custom carrier/expander board, power supply, enclosure, motors/pumps)? EMC/safety for always-on appliance?
Any experiences with exporting CM4 products to these countries?
Using expander/carrier boards commercially?
Is it possible/feasible to use CM4 + a custom or third-party expander board (e.g., for extra GPIO, power management, peripherals like pumps/sensors)?
Does this affect certifications? (e.g., does the modular wireless cert still apply?)
Any recommended carriers for industrial/vending use (reliable supply in India, temp range, etc.)?
Additional things to confirm:
Long-term availability/production commitment for CM4 (until when?).
Bulk purchasing/reseller channels in India (e.g., Element14/RS) vs direct from Raspberry Pi Trading.
Real-world examples of CM4 in commercial vending machines, kiosks, or appliances (success stories or pitfalls).
Any hidden costs/risks (e.g., supply chain, redesign if shortages return).
If we add Wi-Fi/BT — how to leverage modular certification to minimize testing.
Any advice, links to guides, or experiences from those who've done similar commercial projects (e.g., coffee machines, kiosks) would be greatly appreciated! We're balancing cost, reliability, and ease of certification.
Thanks in advance!
