Making stuff always makes sense if you like making stuff, you enjoy the process of solving problems and the consequent learning experience.
I make analogue radios, it doesn't make sense at all from a usage point of view. As soon as I get one right the fun is had, I cannibalise it for the next project.
When I use radios I have various commercial sets, transceivers, SDRs etc.
If you want a laptop because you want to have a kind of portable office workstation, then it doesn't make sense to make one. If you want to enjoy the challenge and the learning experience then it could make total sense. Same applies to just about anything you might use a Pi for.
