General discussion • Odd network speed results

I have an odd puzzle with network speeds.

I have a Pi 1 connected to my home network via ethernet, the Pi runs a few servers and is a headless system. It has speedtest-cli installed as well as iperf3

I have an iperf3 server running on an oracle cloud instance that I use. A script on my Pi runs speedtest-cli regularly and saves it to a text file.

Here's the puzzle, iperf3 run normally and in reverse gives me the expected approximate 35 mbps upload and download transferring around 4 to 5 MBs per check (defaults to 10 checks) whereas of late speedtest-cli gives me around 3.5 mbps download and 2.5 mbps upload.

Assuming the iperf3 check indicates all OK with connection why would speedtest-cli indicate so slow?

Speedtest-cli on my wifi connected laptop shows 26 mbps download and 4.25 mbps upload, my mobile phone running Ookla speedtest shows 26 mbps down and 25 mbps upload.

Appreciate wifi can give erratic results on occasions but why would the Pi connected to ethernet give such varying results?

Geoff
