General discussion • Help - RPi5 not recognizing ext4 2TB external drive

I'd like to use my Raspberry Pi 5 as a NAS, but I'm having a very strange issue that I can't quite figure out.

(I referenced the tutorial in Raspberry Pi documentation mostly but I also dug into the 65-page guide written by someone whose name I can't remember (and he didn't put it in the guide)).

I purchased a 2TB NVME drive from Amazon and a USB 3 enclosure. I first initialized the drive as HFS+ on my Mac, then moved it over to my Pi to format to ext4 as shown in this guide and all the other guides out there on this topic.

When the drive is formatted in HFS+, the Pi detects the drive every time. As soon as I reformat it to ext4, the Pi refuses to recognize it no matter what I do. Once reformatted, both my Mac and an old MacBook Air with Ubuntu will recognize the ext4 NVME drive but the Pi will not. (And yes I rebooted the Pi after formatting).

I tried formatting the drive to ext4 on the Pi via the command line and on the Ubuntu MacBook with Disks to no success. I've tested this many times, going back and forth between HFS+ and ext4 and the Pi just refuses to show it upon

Code:

lsblk
or

Code:

fdisk -l
.

I thought at first it might be a power issue, but I don't understand why it would recognize the drive in HFS+ but not ext4. It's very frustrating. I am not good with Linux, though, so I'm likely doing something wrong.

I greatly appreciate any insight/help.
